Can Microsoft escape gravity and beat Moore’s Law?

Have you ever heard of Moore’s Law? Often declared dead, yet refusing to die, Moore’s Law has been predicting the explosive growth of computing power for 70+ years. Basically, Moore’s Law says that the speed and capability of computers can be expected to double every two years due to increases in the number of transistors a microchip can contain. Simplified, that means that computing power is growing at an extraordinary rate.

Any guesses as to what’s growing faster than computing power? You guessed it, the need for custom apps is experiencing exponential growth.  In fact, Microsoft predicts 500 million apps will be built in the next 5 years, which is more than all the last 40 years combined.  That’s 8 times the previous rate.

How do you eat an elephant that big?

If your company thinks throwing people at the problem by hiring an equal number of programmers will work, they may not be considering the current skills shortage in the global workforce.  Even if the company could budget for that type of hiring push, there are simply not enough people equipped for the task.  It also isn’t feasible to expect people to work more hours or to work faster. And really, neither of those magical solutions feels like it would be tackling the actual problem as we have all heard of construction companies who try to build things faster than the previous year. In this scenario, quality is usually the first thing to be sacrificed in that scenario.  I don’t know how you feel, but quality and security are NOT areas where I believe shortcuts should be taken.

Fortunately for us, Microsoft anticipated this growing need and is already several years into deploying their amazing solution, the Power Platform.  (Applause!)

Skeptical? Don’t just take our word for it.  Gartner has placed Microsoft firmly in the top of their magic quadrant in multiple categories and they lead the charge to solve this business need.  Much the same way that Edward Deming proved to the automotive industry decades ago that it’s possible to increase quality and lower costs at the same time, Microsoft is proving that if you solve the problem by evolving the process, you can increase the security and quality of your apps while you reduce development time and costs.
