Power BI Premium is built for enterprise customers, offering capabilities for large datasets, incremental refresh, paginated reports, more powerful dataflows, Power BI Report Server, Analysis Services in Power BI Premium, and unlimited content sharing.
The main benefit of Power BI Premium capacity is reserved capacity. Instead of Power BI assets sharing capacity with other organizations, your organization has its own exclusive space. Within Premium Capacity, there are lots of choices which P3 Adaptive can advise you on. There are two Power BI Premium SKUs: EM & P. The main difference between EM and P Premium SKUs is that P SKUs give Power BI free users ability to access content, but EM SKUs are used for embedding content. There are various configurations of frontend and backend v-cores. Capacity workloads, capacity management, and monitoring are other factors to consider in implementing Power BI Premium. Microsoft also has a full set of REST APIs for managing Premium Capacities. Power BI Report Server (PBRS) is an on-premises web portal that is included with Power BI Premium licensing.
Generation 2 of Power BI Premium is here. Gen 2 can be licensed by capacity or by Premium Per User. It offers enhanced performance, greater scale with refresh concurrency, and complete separation of report interaction from scheduled refreshes. It also offers improved metrics to help with budgeting and planning of Premium capacity. An optional feature is autoscale, which can add additional v-cores to your Azure subscription as necessary. Gen 2 also reduces the administration overhead for Premium capacity. Premium incremental refresh can be used to optimize your Premium deployment. There are also Gen 2 enhancements for Power BI Embedded.
Beyond capacity, PBI Premium also opens up features that are useful for enterprise-minded organizations. XMLA endpoints are useful for read/write connection to third party tools for oversight or management, as well as to connect other visualization tools like Tableau or others to Power BI datasets.
Premium Per User licensing gives companies access to Premium features without the cost of Premium Capacity. For dataflows, these features include incremental refresh, linked entities, computed entities, direct query, and the enhanced compute engine. Deployment Pipelines enable enterprise-level management of report content. These deployment pipelines ensure that workspaces, apps, reports, scorecards, and dashboards are published to development and test, before they are deployed to production. This provides a more consistent end-user experience with less risk of mistakes.
